BCC Rockley Cup Practice Handicap Race 27 May 2017 - ResultsBy Road Sub-Committee - May 30 2017
A large field of 34 riders lined up for the practice run for one of the toughest events of the year. The race required 3 climbs of Mt Rockley to get to the finish line back on top of My Rockley after 62km. Mt Rockley is the KOM & QOM of the B2B yearly classic race.
The A Grade scratch bunch of 5 riders pushed hard to catch the next A grade bunch (that started 3 minutes ahead) by the turn-around point at Rockley village after 25km. They soon combined into a formidable bunch of 10 riders that began the chase to the B Grade riders ahead.
By the time the riders had ascended to the top of Mt Rockley after 39km, the A Grade bunch were only some 2 mins behind the B Grade bunch that had started 18 minutes ahead of them.
The 2nd ascent of Mt Rockley took its toll as 6 riders withdrew. By the race end 10 did not finish.
The race was won by Josh Corcoran in a race time of 1:40:28, 2nd was Craig Hutton and 3rd was Jay Austin. First lady home was Kirsten Howard in 7th place in a time of 1:45:42. Brett Dinger in C Grade, who is new to the club, had a gutsy race to finish 9th from limit and the first C Grade rider. Emily Watts who started with a 12 minute handicap had a great race to finish 10th only 4.5 mins behind the race leader and was the first B Grade rider home.
