BCC - Old Vale Circuit Graded Scratch Race 16 September 2017
This race was held on a new course for the club over the old motor cycle race track. The course that starts in Lloyds Rd near the dog pound, took in the Vale Rd then up the Lagoon Rd to Gorman’s Hill Rd then back to Lloyds Rd for a loop of 11.5km. The race has only become possible due to the recent sealing of the Gorman’s Hill Rd across to Lagoon Rd. Although some of the old timers told stories of racing in bygone days on the dirt roads of this circuit.
There were 33 riders that started this exciting new race. The course had a mix of 5.5km of flat road, 4.5km of climbing rising 70m and a steep downhill run of 1.5km falling 75m. The constant change of terrain didn’t especially favour any particular rider. The other factor influencing the race was the high winds that gusted between 30 – 50 kph, with riders mostly battling cross winds or head winds.
A Grade did 5 laps of the course to complete 57.5km. B Grade did 4 laps for 46km. C Grade did 3 laps for 34.5km and D Grade did 2 laps for 23km.
A Grade was won by the in-form Will Hodges who led from lap 1 opening up a 51s lead on lap 2 that increased to 2:18 at the end of lap 4. By the end of the race Will won by 2:51s from Harri Carter and Josh Corcoran. Will Hodges put in the fastest lap of 18:22 on lap 3.
B Grade was won by Drew Carter who led from lap 2, closely shadowed by Brian Draper and then Jim Lavis 1:28 later. Fastest lap was taken by Drew Carter in a time of 20:31 on lap 2. Drew & Brian had worked hard together from lap 2 and opened an increasing lead on the other riders. Brian tailed Drew to within metres of the finish, pulled out to try to sprint past Drew but hit the oncoming strong head wind to stay put in 2nd position. Glen Partridge was the unlucky rider in this grade, stopping to help Graham Stait who was suffering on the first lap. Graham withdrew and Glen never got back onto the leaders ahead.
C Grade was won by Brooke Tuynman in a close sprint from Kalinda Robinson and Mick Foran, with less than a bike length separating the 3 riders at the finish line. The C Grade race was a close one with a different leader at the end of each lap, coming down to a 10s gap between 1st and 5th at the end of the race. Mick Foran showed good form, this being his first race since Anzac Day in April this year. He also put in the fastest lap in a time of 22:26 on lap 1. Despite Mick not turning up to races since April, he apparently has worn out a few bike machines at the D2F gym over the past few months.
D Grade was won by Ian McEwen from Tom McClelland and Norman Wise. Fastest lap was taken by Ian McEwen in a time of 25:07 on lap 2. Caroline Robertson who was showing good form on lap 1 and led at the top of the steep descent down Gorman’s Hill road, got the “death wobbles” on her bike in strong cross winds and withdrew due to a mechanical failure.
Hopefully there will be more races on this circuit as everyone enjoyed the new race course.
Attached are the race results.
