BCC – 2 Roads Quarry All in Hcp Race 26 November 2017
The results of Sunday’s race are attached.
There were 18 starters for the all-in handicap race over 25km on the 2 roads Quarry course. Robyn Partridge started first ahead of the other D grade riders off a handicap of 8 mins. By the quarry turn at the 10km mark Caroline Robertson, Norman Wise & Scott Allen had caught Robyn and taken the lead. These 3 riders were the ones the other riders had to catch. They stayed in front till the C grade riders of Hayden Booth, Julian Woods, Rob Stephens, Scott James and Dan Kirby caught them after the Newbridge turn at the 21km mark with 5km to go.
Meanwhile the B Grade duo riders of Brian Draper and Daniel Went were pushing hard to catch the C Grade bunch whilst staying ahead of the chasing four A Grade riders of Josh Corcoran, Harry Carter, Will Hodges and Brad Rayner.
The handicapper had done their job well as15 of the riders came together in the last 2km stretch down St Johns Lane.
For the rest of the story newcomer to the club Julian Woods who has recently moved to Bathurst to work at the Art Gallery, takes up the story.
“Handicap two roads, fantastic day – sun, blue skies, barely any wind. It made for a very enjoyable race. After a year or so of racing in Sydney, mainly crits, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. Being used to circuit races, most of the race I was thinking about what turn to take and when to U-turn, making sure I was with a group, or at least one person. Starting with Jill Harris, Peter Wilson and Dan Kirby we each took good turns at the front. We started to separate on the Quarry climb. At the U turn Peter kept with me and we had a good run down Cow Flat Road. As we reached the bottom of the quarry climb I saw the A Grade bunch starting the ascent. That fuelled my determination to get the pace high with Peter. He stayed with me until he had a flat on the Trunkey Road after Georges Plain. After the Newbridge turn at about the 20km mark the other chasing C Grade riders of Hayden Booth, Rob Stevens and Scott James caught me and we formed a large bunch. This bunch stayed together right up to St Johns Road, where after powering up the little berg, the games of cat and mouse started. Having no idea where the finish line was I thought I’d try to follow any attack. Hayden suddenly started with an attack, I followed his wheel and then saw the line after going over a crest so I kicked and went off. First race, first place with Bathurst Cycling Club”
Second place in a tight finish was Hayden Booth and 3rd was Rob Stevens. B Grade riders Brian Draper and Daniel Went chased hard and Brian finished in 5th only 9 secs behind Julian Woods in 1st place. Daniel Went was 6th a further 18 secs behind Brian. Caroline Robertson in D Grade rode strongly to finish in 7th and first women home only 3 secs behind Daniel. Fastest time was Harry Carter in 9th place with a time of 36:14 min:sec. Jill Harris in 13th place was the fastest women in a time of 45:02 min:sec.
