Bathurst Cycling Club – Remembrance Day Trophy Race 12 November 2017
There were 31 starters for the all in handicap Remembrance Day Trophy Race over 25km on the 2 roads Quarry course. D Grade riders David Hyland, John Kitchen and Robyn Partridge started first, the limit bunch for all others to chase. After 7km John Kitchen took the lead from David Hyland before the climb to the quarry turn point. By the 12km point of the race David fought back to the lead to catch John and both then rode together to stay in front of the other riders. By the Newbridge turn point at 19km, D grade riders Rosemary Hastings and Norman Wise had gained 30 secs on David & John who had started 3 mins ahead of them.
At the other end of the race the A Grade scratch riders of Craig & Billy Hutton, Josh Corcoran and Brad Rayner who started last with an 18 min handicap, chased down all the riders ahead. Billy Hutton & Josh drove the 4 man bunch hard to launch Craig Hutton at the 17km mark to catch the B Grade riders of Brian Draper & Charlie Cross at the bottom of the steep climb to the quarry. The strong ride of A Graders Billy Hutton & Josh saw them depleted and soon were DNFs. Now a new bunch of 3 riders Craig Hutton, Brian Draper & Charlie Cross gathered their strength to chase down the leaders.
The handicapper had done their job well as most riders came together in the last 2km stretch down St Johns Lane. One rider, Donna Scott from C Grade, got extra help in the lane from a wasp that put a bit of a sting in her tail for the sprint to the finish.
By the finish David Hyland held on in the sprint from John Kitchen to take the race win, his first ever in a handicap race. Third was Eliza Bennett in C Grade following on from her good form in the recent Bathurst track cycle carnival. Fourth was Chris McEwen in C Grade in a narrow margin from Rosemary Hasting & Norman Wise in D grade.
Fastest time was recorded by Craig Hutton from A Grade in 10th place in 37min 35 sec. Second fastest was Brad Rayner in 38min 01sec and third fastest was Brian Draper in good form in a time of 39min 37 sec. Fastest female was Toireasa Gallagher in 44min 50sec followed closely by Jill Harris in 44min 55sec and Donna Scott in 45min 13sec.
The handicapper did an excellent job as only 3 mins separated 1st to 10th place at the finish line after 25km and only 5 mins separated 1st to 20th place.
